Our story
About Capital Crew
Founded in 2023 by dedicated Carleton alumni, Capital Crew was created to establish a space for professional hip-hop entertainment within Ottawa’s basketball scene. Over two seasons, the team brought electrifying energy to Ottawa BlackJacks home games and showcased dynamic performances at various venues across the city.In 2025, Capital Crew entered a new era under the leadership of Sissi Malula, Yolanda Yip, Kareem Byfield and Zaria Nicholson. No longer under the BlackJacks, Capital Crew has expanded into Ottawa’s premier hype squad, bringing high-energy hip-hop, crowd-engaging performances to a variety of sporting and community events across the city. The team is composed of an adult team 18+ and a Junior team for athletes 18 and under.At the core of our identity is a commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). We recognize the lack of representation in sports entertainment. We are dedicated to creating an inclusive space where dancers of all backgrounds feel empowered to showcase their talents at the highest level. Capital Crew is more than just a hype squad—we are making space for current and future performers, redefining the role of dance in sports and ensuring that all performers feel seen, valued, and celebrated.In 2025 and beyond, our mission extends beyond game days. Capital Crew will be actively engaged in the community, supporting local and professional sports teams, leading school dance programs, and performing at major events across Canada and the U.S. We are committed to not only elevating the energy of sporting events but also inspiring the next generation of performers through visibility, mentorship, and advocacy.

How can I prepare for auditions?
Be yourself! Capital Crew is all about celebrating diversity and individuality. There are no gender, height, or weight requirements—everyone is welcome! Wear whatever makes you feel confident and ready to perform.Auditions will include learning various combos and showcasing your freestyle skills, so come prepared to move, express yourself, and bring your energy!
What is the time commitment?
Capital Crew trains once a week for 3 hours during the regular season, with the possibility of an occasional second practice when needed. Any additional practices will be scheduled with advance notice to ensure everyone can plan accordingly. Our flexible event sign-up system also allows athletes to choose performances based on their availability, making it easy to balance commitment with other responsibilities.
